Time is Running Out: Buy MedSpa Equipment Now to Save on Taxes
If you're a MedSpa owner, now's the time to get into the holiday spirit and do a little shopping for your Medical Spa. The benefit?
Get your shopping done before December 31st, and come April, you can count your eligible equipment acquisitions in this fiscal year.
Many MedSpa owners operate on the principle that purchase costs for equipment and furniture must be depreciated over a number of years for tax purposes. This, however, is often not the case. In order to stimulate economic growth, the Internal Revenue Service Section 179 states: "You may elect to expense part or all of the cost of Section 179 property that you placed in service during the tax year and used predominately (more than 50 percent) in your trade or business."
Before 2003, Section 179 deductions for each piece of equipment were limited to $25,000. With the Jobs and Growth Act of 2003, the Section 179 small-business expensing limits increased to $100,000. For this year, the amount is up to $105,000. The caveat here is that the item(s) must be in use by year-end. The expensing-limit increase will expire and return to its previous level of $25,000 after 2007 if there is no additional action by Congress.
Eligible business purchases include:
Equipment of all types, electronic and other (i.e. IPL, microdermabrasion, computers, LED)
Software
Furnishings (i.e. treatment tables, chairs, cabinets)
Ineligible purchases include:
Real estate & Investment property
Property of all types held in trust or estates (including equipment, machinery, etc.)
Detailed information on Section 179 deductions can be found on the IRS web site with “Publication 946, How To Depreciate Property”. As with any tax issues, you must consult with your tax adviser to make sure that you are taking full advantage of deductions allowed for your specific situation.
If you want to take advantage of this years Section 179 expense provision, call MedSpa Financing to ensure your equipment purchase meets the Section 179 requirements. We have several special programs that combines the benefits of leasing (no down payment, 3-5 year terms, save your cash), while allowing you to take advantage of the tax benefits the Section 179 expense provision may allow you.

Medical Spa Resources
Medical Spa Financing offers financing services for medical spas. These include Working Capital Programs, Leasehold Improvement Financing, Facility Financing, Practice Acquisitions, and other financing assistance to healthcare providers in the acquisition of existing facilities.

This is a very lucrative business, with the potential for impressive cash flow. It is also a business that is capital intensive, and the best way to manage the high startup costs is to utilize the flexible financing available. The MediSpa industry, perhaps more than any other, is one where you must control your capital costs in order to maximize your monthly cash flow." (from MedSpa Financing website)

From that site:"A medical spa is a facility that operates under the full-time, on-site supervision of a licensed health care professional. The facility operates within the scope of practice of its staff, and offers traditional, complementary, and alternative health practices and treatments in a spa-like setting. Practitioners working within a medical spa will be governed by their appropriate licensing board, if licensure is required."

Research in Ayurveda has to be speeded up: governor
Trissur (Kerala): Kerala Governor R.L. Bhatia Friday asked participants at a global summit on Ayurveda here to ensure that research and development in the field is speeded up. "Presently what is lacking in ayurveda treatment is immediate relief, unlike the modern system of medicine and that has to change. The need of the hour is a synthesis between innovation and traditions in ayurveda," Bhatia said while inaugurating the three-day meet. Delegates from Britain, Russia and South Korea have begun arriving for the event at the Ayurveda Expo-2005 being held as part of the birth centenary celebrations of Ashtavaidyan Padamsri E.T. Neelakandhan Mooss, founder of the Vaidyaratnam group of institutions. Also attending are scientists and research scholars from India's leading universities and academic institutions. Speaking on the occasion, state Health Minister K.K. Ramachandran said Ayurveda offered tremendous scope for treating lifestyle diseases. "We have plenty of medicinal plants and cultivation of these plants has to be taken up in Kerala on a large scale. Ayurvedic drugs also have to be standardised to help clinical trials and testing," he said. Over the next two days, three sessions at the summit will cover diseases caused by lifestyles, application of biotechnology in Ayurveda and "rasayana" therapy. The sessions will also attempt to develop an inter-disciplinary approach by featuring presentations from leading doctors belonging to non-Ayurvedic systems of medicine.

Governor vouches for efficacy of ayurveda
Thrissur: Kerala Governor R L Bhatia yesterday gave a personal testimony on the efficacy of ayurveda saying that his prostate enlargement has been kept under control since 1985 with an ayurvedic pill.
Inaugurating a three-day global summit on ayurveda, organised by the Vaidyratnam group here yesterday, Bhatia said he had been taking 'chandraprabha' pills ever since his prostate problem was detected while in hospital for treating gun shot wounds in a terrorist attack.
It was during an abdomen ultrasound that the doctors who were looking for embedded bullets chanced on the prostrate enlargement. The surgeons immediately decided to remove the prostate but an ayurveda doctor forbade them, requesting that the option for an ayurvedic treatment should be left to the VIP patient.
"I went by my ayurvedic friend's advice and my prostate has been intact ever since. Several allopaths who refused to be convinced initially subjected me to tests and were astonished to see the wonderful effect of our indigenous system of medicine", said the governor.
He said that ayurveda should provide quick relief to patients and the system should integrate with modern technology for global acceptance.

The Daily Dose: India’s traditional medicine
According to Soutik Biswas of BBC News, India is taking steps to catalogue its thousands of years of expertise in traditional forms of healing:
In a quiet government office in the Indian capital, Delhi, some 100 doctors are hunched over computers poring over ancient medical texts and keying in information.
These doctors are practitioners of ayurveda, unani and siddha, ancient Indian medical systems that date back thousands of years.
One of them is Jaya Saklani Kala, a young ayurveda doctor, who is wading through a dog-eared 500-year-old text book for information on a medicine derived from the mango fruit.
"Soon the world will know the medicine, and the fact that it originated from India," she says.
With help from software engineers and patent examiners, Ms Kala and her colleagues are putting together a 30-million-page electronic encyclopaedia of India's traditional medical knowledge, the first of its kind in the world.
One motivation for doing so is to head off those who want to patent these cures:
The sheer wealth of material that has to be read through for information is enormous — there are some 54 authoritative 'text books' on ayurveda alone, some thousands of years old.
Then there are nearly 150,000 recorded ayurvedic, unani and siddha medicines; and some 1,500 asanas (physical exercises and postures) in yoga, which originated in India more than 5,000 years ago.
Under normal circumstances, a patent application should always be rejected if there is prior existing knowledge about the product.
But in most of the developed nations like the United States, "prior existing knowledge" is only recognised if it is published in a journal or is available on a database — not if it has been passed down through generations of oral and folk traditions.

Ayurveda to treat health problems in IT industry
Ayurveda is all set to target the IT industry to treat the backaches, insomnia and blurring eyesight which many techies are generally prone to.
A detailed treatment protocol for treating software professionals would be outlined at the three day Global Summit on Ayurveda at Thrissur next month, said eminent ayurveda expert Neelakantan Mooss here Thursday.
Mooss, who belongs to the Ashtavaidyan Thaikkattu Mooss Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala, said detailed examinations had been carried out among techies in the age group of 25 and 35 years.
"We have found that they suffer from computer vision syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, insomnia, lumbago and cervical spondylosis and we are coming out with a treatment protocol," he told reporters.
According to Mooss, big IT firms like Infosys and the Indian Institute of Management at Bangalore are planning to start ayurveda centres in their campus.
"We already have had talks with these institutions," he said.
He denied that his institution was going to commercialise ayurveda among the techies.
"Our hospital in Thrissur does not entertain clients, especially foreign tourists, just for giving massages. What we strictly follow is consultation-based treatment and not packaged ayurveda treatment protocols. For the techies we would devise a capsule form of treatment because they might be unable to spend three or four weeks for the treatment," he said.
Treatment protocols to be unveiled at the Global Summit include computer vision syndrome, which impairs vision and presents dryness in eyes, fatigue, headache and also carpal tunnel syndrome, which makes the wrists and hands numb. Lumbago or low back ache is another common ailment of the techies and also cervical spondylitis.
Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala was set up in 1941 and has played a pioneering role in setting standards for the ayurveda industry in the state as well as in the country.

Turmeric and Cancer Treatment
by: Jai Dharma on Nov 22 2005 5:07PM in HealthYet another example of how new scientific research is providing evidence of the medicinal properties of spices. This time, “haldi” and its beneficial impact on cancer treatment. Read the full article here: “How curry can help keep cancer at bay” (15th Oct ’05)
As the article mentions, “It is not the first time scientists have found that curries can be good for health. Curcumin, a member of the ginger family, is already widely used in Indian and Chinese medicine for a range of ailments from rheumatism to abdominal pain.
Studies have suggested that turmeric - of which curcumin is the active ingredient - can help to slow prostate cancer. And last year, researchers said curcumin, which gives curries a mustard-yellow colour, could help protect the brain against the onset of Alzheimer's Disease.
This could explain why rates of Alzheimer's are far lower in India than in the West. Other curry spices linked to health benefits include coriander, which aids digestion, and fenugreek, which can help prevent mouth ulcers and sore throats.”
