Abhyanga-oil massage for Daily Routine by Dr. Jayashree Nataraj

Ayurveda envisages the effect of daily oil massage and recommends the practice of abhyanga as one important component of dinacharya- the daily regimen one has to follow in order to be healthy.

The merits of abhyanga are:

  • Improves the complexion,
  • Makes the skin glow and prevents dry and rough skin,
  • Promotes better skin texture,
  • Improves blood circulation,
  • Pacifies the skin affections,
  • Improves physical strength and stamina,
  • Improves muscle strength and bulk,
  • Improves the nervous system. thereby preventing nervous disorders,
  • Improves digestion,
  • Relieves constipation
  • Prevents aging
Abhyanga procedure-
Use warm oil- olive oil, coconut oil, sesame oil or medicated oil required for the specific purpose.
Apply gently all over the body in the direction of hair follicles,
While massaging the whole palm should be used.
The place of massage should be warm, without air-cooling, or too much of cold breeze.
Every day abhyanga to the scalp and the soles of the feet is mandatory. This will take care of the whole body even when the whole body is not massaged with oil.
The pressure exerted during oil massage should just sufficient to produce warmth and should not be too vigorous; relaxing and not exciting. Continue Reading >>
