Ayurvedic Eye Care Beauty Tips

By Dr. M V Subramanyam, MD, PhD (Shalakya Tantra )

Eye Care

The skin around eyes is vulnerable part of body's entire skin surface. In most areas of the body, the blood supply cools, warms, and nourishes the skin, but facial skin, and especially the skin around the eyes, serves an additional function, that of emotional response.

On top of the emotional stresses and free radical assaults, environmental factors such as automobile exhaust and second-hand tobacco smoke cause adverse effects on skin.
Allergies to nail polish and some perfumed cosmetics can also lead to a compromised skin texture around the eyes. Even internet addiction can be a factor! And of course, the sun can produce further signs of aging. Sunscreen lotions and creams are widely used to protect facial skin, but unfortunately, most sunscreens cannot be used close to the eyes. Health Tip: What's an A1c Test?

(HealthDay News) - A hemoglobin A1c test is recommended for many diabetics several times per year. The test helps doctors see how well blood sugar has been controlled over the prior two or three months.

The University of Michigan Health System offers this additional information about the test:
  • The amount of hemoglobin A1c in your blood indicates how high your blood sugar has been over the past three months. This can help determine if medication, diet and other remedies prescribed by your doctor are working.
  • The test should be done every three months, unless you have your sugar well- controlled. In that case, your doctor may suggest getting the test every six months.
  • Test results can help predict the likelihood of diabetic complications, including heart disease, or damage to the eyes, kidneys or nervous system.

Ayurtox

You are a toxic cesspool of the lifetime accumulation of chemicals from air, food, and water.

These accumulated toxins contribute to nearly every disease, sickness, and malfunction of the body. Your body is like a city where the sanitation units are on strike.

As the garbage bags pile up, the city slows down and if the situation were to continue to crisis proportions, unsanitary conditions would cause widespread illness, disease, and death amongst the population. The sanitation officers in our body that find and eliminate toxins comprise our excretory system (kidneys, intestines, lungs, skin, and liver).

When they are severely overworked, they go on strike. When this occurs, waste and toxins buildup in your body, channeling of nutrients becomes inefficient, the situation compounds itself, and various disease states become inevitable. The largest internal organ in the body is the liver. It performs many functions in addition to body detoxification.

The liver works by both filtering toxins directly and by altering toxins so that they can be removed at other stages of detoxification. The liver filters toxins from about 1 liter of blood every minute. Some of these toxins are endotoxins (produced in the body) and exotoxins (from outside the body). These wastes are eliminated the kidneys or the colon. Other toxins, composed of compounds that are difficult for the liver to filter, must be broken down with enzymes so that they can be removed.

A properly functioning liver is vital to your health. Serious toxin overload can easily occur. Toxins released from the liver must leave the body through the colon. If a person is constipated, the toxins are not eliminated and are instead reabsorbed back into the liver.

This occurs while new exotoxins are continually introduced into the body through medication, pesticides, cigarette smoke, pollution, impurities in food, bacteria, and other problematic substances in the environment; and new endotoxins are created in the body due to stress and lack of exercise.

The road to disease is soon paved with an improperly functioning liver, gummed up excretory system, and a slew of toxins that bind to enzymes at the cellular level and neutralize them, so that cells no longer function optimally. Western medicine relies on aggressive prescription drugs and surgery to deal with many problems related to body toxicity.

Unfortunately, these methods often result in unwanted and even dangerous side effects. Natural pills provide only fleeting, inconsistent results. Ayurveda, the science of life, prevention and longevity, is the oldest and most holistic and comprehensive medical system available.

Its fundamentals can be found in Hindu scriptures called the Vedas - the ancient Indian books of wisdom written over 5,000 years ago. Ayurveda uses the inherent principles of nature to help maintain health in a person by keeping the individual's body, mind, and spirit in perfect equilibrium with nature.

India Herbs has a seasoned group of Ayurvedic doctors specialized in Vajikarana. Vajikarana is "a process or a drug, which make a man as healthy as a ox and able to undergo many hours of physical rigors." Vajikarana prescribes the therapeutic use of various herbal and tonic preparations for enhancing the capabilities and vigor of your body's detoxification system while strengthening the body and overall well-being.

India Herbs' Vajikarana scientists combine a proprietary herbal formula based on centuries' old wisdom with advice on diet, exercise, mental training, and relaxation to help men and women reach their peak and overcome their toxicity concerns through safe, natural means.

Results: The precise combination of ingredients in Ayurtox along with a mind-body focus precisely addresses your natural detoxification needs!

More Young Americans Are Contracting HIV

(HealthDay News) -- In the 26 years since scientists first spotted AIDS in America, millions of dollars have been poured into outreach efforts aimed at keeping young people clear of HIV, the virus that causes the disease.

But on the eve of World AIDS Day, a disturbing statistical fact has emerged in this country: The number of newly infected teens and young adults is suddenly on the rise.

And the question is, why?

According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for 2001 to 2005 (the latest years available), the number of new cases of HIV infection diagnosed among 15-to-19-year-olds in the United States rose from 1,010 in 2001, held steady for the next three years, then jumped 20 percent in 2005, to 1,213 cases.

For young people aged 20 to 24, cases of new infection have climbed steadily, from 3,184 in 2001 to 3,876 in 2005.

Newer infection numbers set to be released soon by the CDC may be even higher, the Washington Post reported Saturday. According to the Post, sources close to scientists preparing the new statistics have confirmed that rates of new infection in the United States may be 50 percent higher than previously believed -- a jump from 40,000 new infections per year to up to 60,000. The increase is based on new blood testing methods, the Post said, and whether it signifies a growth in actual cases remains to be seen.

Experts say a number of factors may be at play, including the fact that many HIV-infected patients are now being kept healthy with powerful drugs -- making AIDS seem like less of a threat to young people than it did in the past.

"Certainly the 'scare factor' isn't there anymore," said Rowena Johnston, vice president of research at the Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) in New York City.

In the 1980s and early 1990s, the ravages of AIDS were apparent to most Americans -- either on their TV screens as high-profile celebrities succumbed to the disease, or as individuals lost friends or family members to HIV.

"To see people looking gaunt, skinny and skeletal, and to know that they were going to be dead soon," Johnston said. "It had a sobering effect."

The advent of antiretroviral drugs in the mid-1990s changed all that, however. "These days, for the most part, you can look at a person and not know that they even have AIDS," Johnston said.
That's making HIV seem like less of a threat to young people, said Martha Chono-Helsley. She's executive director of REACH LA, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit that helps disadvantaged youth understand and defend against threats like poverty, drug abuse and HIV.

"They're in this age group that feels they are invincible -- that it's never going to happen to them," she said. "Yes, they're getting all these messages from public schools on HIV and AIDS, but they've never actually seen what HIV has done, up close and personal."

Chris Blades, one of REACH LA's young, black "peer educators," said he's seen a kind of nonchalance towards HIV among the gay or bisexual men of color that he counsels.

"On a daily basis, they don't see their friends suffering from it, so it's not a major threat to them," said Blades, 21. "They're in that whole mindset of 'Oh, it can't happen to me, it will never happen to me.'"

But there has been a recent, troubling spike in new infections among gay men, young and old alike. According to the CDC, the rate of new cases of HIV infection linked to male-male sex held steady at around 16,000 cases between 2001-2004, then suddenly jumped to 18,296 in 2005.
Johnston and Chono-Helsley both point to advertisements for HIV-suppressing medicines as one possible contributing factor.

"In gay magazines, you now see [ads with] buff, handsome men climbing mountains, with some kind of quote about how 'I'm not letting HIV get in my way,'" Johnston said. "It sends the message that you, too, can be hot, buff and handsome, even with HIV."

Chono-Helsley agreed. "It's always these bright, healthy vibrant young men in these ads," she said. That could spur young gay men to relax their guard and take more risks, thinking that if they do contract HIV, "I only have to take a pill," she said.

The reality of living with HIV in America is much different, however, even when medication is working. According to Johnston, the side effects of powerful HIV-suppressing drug cocktails include fat redistribution (including unsightly "humps"), insulin resistance, higher cholesterol, increased risks for heart disease, and dangerous liver toxicities.

There's also the fear that, someday, HIV will develop mutations that render these drugs useless, triggering the re-emergence of AIDS, she said.

HIV continues to cut a wide swath through young men and women in the black community, too. According to the CDC, the number of new infections actually dipped slightly for black Americans between 2001 (20,868 cases) and 2005 (18,121 cases). However, black men are still six times more likely than white men to contract HIV, and black women are 20 times more likely to acquire the virus compared to white women.

The answers to that disparity lie mainly in economics, experts say.

"The young men that we work with are predominantly African-American, and HIV is not their No. 1 priority," said Chono-Helsley. "Often survival is their main priority -- where they are going to sleep tonight. They're kicked out of the house; they have substance abuse issues, they're in recovery."

Young black women can easily get caught up in similar problems, or are coerced into unsafe sex by their partners, she added.

Another trend -- soaring rates of methamphetamine use over the past five years -- may also be fueling HIV infection rates for both blacks and young gay men, the experts noted.

Too often, marginalized young people develop "a 'whatever' attitude -- whatever happens, happens," Chono-Helsey said.

Outreach aimed at HIV prevention remains important, of course. But one expert believes too much state and federal money is being funneled away from community outreach programs and toward "HIV Stops With Me" campaigns that focus on individuals already living with the virus.
"The message there is that, if I don't have HIV right now, then all I have got to do is avoid those people who have got it," said Carrie Davis, director of adult services at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered Community Center in New York City.

She believes those types of messages allow uninfected people to shift the burden of responsibility from themselves to the HIV-positive, or to people they deem at high risk, such as gay men or drug abusers.

"I think it affects straight people, too, in that they absorb this 'magical thinking' -- that this is someone else's problem," Davis said.

So what doeswork to change attitudes and behaviors? That's a tough question, Chono-Helsley said, and the answer usually depends on particular contexts and communities.

"You really have to evaluate what methods you're using and think about the person as a whole, not just the infection," she said. "Because they've all heard 'use a condom, use a condom.'"

The right approach is key, Blades added. "If you deliver the message to them in a way that's not preachy or looking down on them, I think that's more effective," he said. "That's what we try to do - deliver HIV information in a way that will click in with them, so that they'll take home something that they didn't know the night before."

"One thing is for sure, we can't just shake our finger at young people and say, 'You're bad,'" Chono-Helsley said. "We have to be supportive. They're young, we've all been there, remember. You can save some, but you can't save them all."

Health Tip: Dangerous Dieting

(HealthDay News) -- The right way to diet and lose weight is slowly, over time, and while eating a balanced diet with plenty of healthy foods, the American Heart Association says.

Diets that encourage eating only one type of food or encourage rapid weight loss can be dangerous to your health.

The association offers this list of the possible risks posed by fad diets:

Nutritional deficiencies caused by a lack of a balanced diet.

Lack of physical activity from emphasis on diet only can increase the risk of heart disease.

Lack of variety in foods can cause boredom and frustration, and make it difficult to maintain the diet for more than a brief period.

Severe restrictions on the foods you can eat may make it difficult to establish and maintain a healthy diet in the future.

Many quick weight-loss diets are based on unfounded claims that may do more harm than good.

Heart Disease a Risk Factor for Alzheimer's

(HealthDay News) -- There's more evidence that cardiovascular problems help drive Alzheimer's disease, scientists say, and that treating the heart might help protect the brain.

The findings "represent hope that interventions with well-known drugs can interfere with the disease's progression," said lead investigator Yan Deschaintre, a neurologist and research fellow at the University Regional Hospital Center in Lille, France.

In fact, cognitive impairment, as measured by a standard test, stayed in the low end of the mild range over 36 months for Alzheimer's patients who got treatments for both the neurological disease and their cardiovascular problems, the researchers reported.

In contrast, Alzheimer's patients with vascular trouble who did not receive these medications experienced declines in cognition that approached the severe level, Deschaintre's team found.

They were slated to present the findings Sunday at the Alzheimer Association's International Conference on Prevention of Dementia, in Washington, D.C.

According to the National Institute on Aging, about 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease. Rates rise steadily with age, and experts estimate that "nearly half of those 85 and older may have the disease." One recent study from the World Health Organization, released this week, warned that Alzheimer's -- which currently has no cure -- could affect 100 million people worldwide by 2050.

The new study was based on chart reviews of 891 French patients diagnosed with either Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular disease plus Alzheimer's disease, or vascular dementia. The cognitive risk factors included in the study were high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, atherosclerotic disease and tobacco smoking.

Treatment was defined as receiving an antihypertensive drug, insulin or drugs to lower blood sugar, a cholesterol-lowering statin, or anti-clotting medications. The patients with Alzheimer's disease typically received medications aimed at temporarily curbing their symptomsthat included Aricept, Exelon or Reminyl.

Deschaintre's findings represent "pretty exciting work," because cardiovascular risk factors are "something we can do something about," said Dr. Sam Gandy, director of Emory University's Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases. Gandy also is chairman of the Alzheimer's Association's National Medical and Scientific Advisory Council.

The work done by Deschaintre's team is consistent "with what we've been hearing over the past three to five years" about vascular risk factors increasing the risk for Alzheimer's, Gandy said. The new study, "really nails that down by looking at the other side of the coin by establishing that treating vascular risk factors slows the progression of cognitive decline," he added.

He suggested that physicians begin to take vascular risk factors seriously as they treat patients with Alzheimer's. The vascular risk factors for early Alzheimer's patients "certainly should be treated" because it "seems to slow progression," Gandy said.

Another expert agreed.

The Lille results "reinforce the treatment guidelines for these vascular conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes, and emphasize that Alzheimer's and demented patients should be treated, too," said Hugh C. Hendrie, a professor of psychiatry at the Indiana University Medical School and a scientist at its Center for Aging Research.

However, Deschaintre and Hendrie both noted that physicians at times may not treat vascular risk factors in Alzheimer's patients, for a variety of reasons. For example, Alzheimer's disease often leaves patients apathetic, so they may neglect to tell their physicians about vascular symptoms, Hendrie said.

And Deschaintre noted that, in the clinic where the research was done, patients with Alzheimer's were less likely than other patients to be treated for vascular risk factors. The reverse was true, as well -- patients with vascular dementia were more likely to be treated for heart risk factors, but not for Alzheimer's.

But, "since the majority of patients have both Alzheimer's disease and cerebrovascular disease, and since patients with pure Alzheimer's do seem to benefit from treatment of vascular risk factors, the message is to treat both conditions rather than to focus only on one," he said.

Hendrie remained cautious about the scientific impact of Deschaintre's study, however. He said results from a clinical epidemiological study, such as the Lille research, aren't as conclusive or compelling as those from randomized, controlled clinical trials.

Two other studies scheduled for release at the Alzheimer's conference on Sunday also emphasized the role of the brain-body connection in cognitive impairment and dementia.

Weight loss may signal the onset of Alzheimer's, and the rate of weight loss could be early warning of dementia severity, according to a new review of data from what's known as the Nun's Study. That effort followed health outcomes for a group of 537 non-demented Catholic sisters, aged 75 to 102, for 10 years.

In the study, a team led by Dr. James Mortimer, a professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of South Florida, Tampa, found that unexplained weight loss late in life was often linked to Alzheimer's neuropathology in the brain and not to any change in eating habits linked to Alzheimer's.

Mortimer explained that, "early weight loss appears to result from the Alzheimer's disease process itself before that process leads to dementia. That's why it is a marker of impending dementia."

In a third study, a team from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., found an increased risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia among 70- to 89-year-olds who have had a carotid endarterectomy (surgical clearance of the carotid artery, which brings blood to the brain) or a stroke or "mini-stroke," also known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA).

In the study, the team compared the medical histories of 295 people with MCI and 590 age and sex-matched controls. "Elderly subjects who have had a carotid endarterectomy or stroke or TIA are about two times more likely to have MCI," lead researcher Dr. Rosebud O. Roberts, a Mayo epidemiologist, said in a prepared statement.

Health Tip: Signs of Hyperthyroidism

(HealthDay News) -- Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid overproduces hormones that control the body's metabolism.

The American Academy of Family Physicians lists these common warning signs of hyperthyroidism:

Sudden, unexplained weight loss.
Weakened muscles and fatigue.
Feelings of nervousness and anxiousness.
Excessive sweating.
Rapid heartbeat.
Tremors.
Eyes that are red, wide, or swollen.
The academy says other diseases and conditions can mimic these symptoms, so your doctor may run some tests to confirm a suspected diagnosis.

New Drug Counteracts Overeating

(HealthDay News) -- A pill might one day achieve the same calorie-burning effects of vigorous exercise.

It's possible, according to a scientist who's developed a potential weight-loss drug that revs up cellular metabolism, much like what happens during heavy physical activity.

In mice, the drug does "result in protection against weight gain on high-fat and high-caloric diets," said Ronald M. Evans, an investigator at The Salk Institute in San Diego. "We're very excited by the potential extension to people."

Of course, there's one big caveat: mice aren't people, and no one knows if the drug will allow ordinary folks to eat to their heart's content without gaining weight.

At stake is a medical solution for people who want to lose weight but either will not diet and exercise properly or can't lose enough weight that way. Diet pills have existed for decades, but they have significant side effects and aren't always effective.

One possible solution is to rev up the body's metabolism, the process whereby it turns food into energy. That's where Evans enters the picture.

He has developed a drug that uses chemicals to turn on a genetic switch in the body known as PPAR-d.

Evans is scheduled to talk about the drug Monday at Experimental Biology 2007, an annual scientific program of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, in Washington D.C.

When given the drug in the form of a liquid or powder, the bodies of mice appear to act as if they are exercising even when they aren't, causing their metabolism to speed up, Evans explained. "You then have lower fatty acid levels in your blood, lower triglyceride levels, and lower sugar levels," he said. "They all appear to be linked."

Mice who received the drug were also able to exercise twice as long, turning into what researchers calls "marathon mice."

But what about humans?
According to Evans, the drug could indeed become a "fat pill," although "anything like this will be more effective in the context of a healthy diet and exercise. If you want to get a maximum benefit, just doing it with the drugs alone will always be somewhat of a challenge."

Several companies are testing drugs that target the genetic switch in people, Evans said.
While an effective weight-loss pill is the "holy grail" of obesity research, there are plenty of reasons to be cautious about the new finding, said Leah Whigham, a research scientist who studies nutrition at the University of Wisconsin, in Madison.

"The most obvious caution is that this work is in mice, which are much different from humans and have different energy expenditure mechanisms. It remains to be seen if this research can translate into something useful for humans," she said.

Also, mice are much more similar to each other than humans. "Something that works in all mice of a given strain might not be as effective across a population of humans with differing genetic, ethnic, cultural environmental backgrounds," she explained.

Still, Whigham said, "that doesn't mean this research isn't very exciting. It is just very preliminary at this point."

Happy Holidays, Without the Weight Gain

(HealthDay News) -- From now until New Year's, it's a season of eating, drinking and, well, more eating and drinking.

And worrying about how all those extra calories will translate into extra pounds the next time you dare to step on the scale.

Relax. It doesn't have to be another holiday of nail-biting between nibblings, experts say. All you need is the proper attitude and proven strategies that work to keep your calories-in, calories-out equation balanced.

Anyone who's fought with the scale over the holidays (or shoved it under the bed) knows the basic tricks: Drink water or eat an apple before heading out to a party. Or say, "No, thank you," nicely but firmly, when Aunt Hattie offers you a giant piece of pecan pie a la mode for the fifth time.

But other strategies and perspectives may be new to you.

"Perspective is key during the holiday season," said Jeannie Moloo, a registered dietitian in Roseville, Calif., and an American Dietetic Association spokeswoman. "It's not the best time of year for weight loss. Focus instead on maintaining a healthy weight, not on losing."

Keep that focus when you're faced with a huge buffet or Mom's homemade cooking, added Leslie Bonci, a registered dietitian and director of sports medicine nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Don't deprive yourself -- but don't give free rein to your gastronomic impulses, either.

"You can enjoy everything, but cut it by a third," she said. "Instead of having three cookies, have two. Instead of a two-inch slice of pie, try for about a one-and-a-half inch slice. Instead of a big scoop of both stuffing and potatoes, have a half scoop of each."

And don't forget the "calories-out" part of the equation. "Always look for opportunities to move. Make sure getting some daily physical activity during the holidays remains a priority," Moloo said. "It can be challenging with shorter days and hectic schedules to keep physical activity on the calendar, but now is not the time to go sedentary."

If you have young kids, you can build physical activity into your day by suggesting a walk to the park or a snowman-building contest or other winter fun. Or you might buddy up with a co-worker and hit the health club or a walking path at least three times a week, after work or during lunch.

You can manage those holiday parties, too, Bonci said, whether you're the host or the guest. As the hostess, she said, "There don't have to be cookies in every room in your house. Set up 'no eating' zones." Your guests will probably thank you, at least silently. It'll give them a chance to avoid temptation and focus on socializing and friendships.

And not everything has to be sugary to be festive. "Use fresh fruit for edible holiday decorations," said Lona Sandon, a registered dietitian at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, and a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. "Fill large glass bowls or baskets with washed, fresh fruits."

If you know you'll be tempted with endless party buffets or tables full of family favorites, refresh your memory ahead of time about proper portion sizes, Moloo said.

"Portion size is key to managing weight, especially during the holidays," she said. "A few tips to keep in mind: Keep protein servings [such as your meat dish] to the size of the palm of your hand. Your fat choice -- for instance butter, sour cream, salad dressing -- should be no larger than twice your thumbnail. One cupped hand is a serving of rice or pasta, and a baseball is the size of a potato." Any more, and you're overdoing it.

If you'll be traveling during the holidays, Moloo suggests packing healthy snacks that keep. That way, you'll be less tempted by less-than-healthy airline or airport fare or fast-food outlets along the highway.

If all else fails, remember you have the power over the food, not the other way around. "If you have to, physically remove yourself from the food," Bonci said. At a party, you can walk away and find someone interesting to talk to, or admire your host's artwork or interior design. At home, you might decide to rake leaves or play in the snow, she said.

What is the Cause of Cancer and Where Does it Begin?

During Week 2 of our Thursday night teleseminar we answered several questions. The following is an overview of those questons and answers.

1) What is the origin of cancer or where does cancer begin?

Cancerous tissue, above all other consequences of choice, has countless secondary causes.

But even for a cancerous condition there is only ONE PRIME ORIGIN and CAUSE.

I have simply summarized this origin and cause of cancerous tissue in a few words.

The prime origin and cause of cancerous tissue is the over-acidification of the blood then the tissues due to lifestyle and dietary choices.

A cancerous tissue begins with our choices of what we eat, what we drink, what we think and how we live. Cancer is a liquid and this liquid is a toxic waste product of metabolism or energy consumption. In 1966, Dr. Otto Warburg, who won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1931 for his discovery of the cause of cancer delivered a lecture at an annual meeting of Nobelists at Lindau, Germany.

In his speech he described the primal cause of cancer as follows: "The prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar. All normal body cells meet their energy needs by respiration of oxygen, whereas cancer cells meet their energy needs in great part by fermentation.

All normal body cells are thus obligate aerobes, whereas all cancer cells are partial anaerobes. From the standpoint of the physics and chemistry of life this difference between nomal and cancer cells is so great that one can scarely picture a greater difference.

Oxygen gas, the donor of energy in plants and animals is dethroned in the cancer cells and replaced by an energy yielding reaction of the lowest living forms. namely, a fermentation of glucose."The following is a summary of understanding cancerous tissues:

Cancer is not a cell but a poisonous acidic liquid.A cancer cell, is a cell that has been spoiled or poisoned by metabolic or gastrointestinal acids.A tumor is the body's protective mechanism to encapsulate spoiled or poisoned cells from excess acid that has not been properly eliminated through urination, perspiration, defecation or respiration.

The tumor is the body's solution to protect healthy cells and tissues.

Cancer is a systemic acidic condition that settles at the weakest parts of the body -not a localized problem that metastases. Metastases is localized acids spoiling other cells much like a rotten apple spoiling a bushel of healthy apples. There is no such thing as a cancer cell.

A cancer cell was once a healthy cell that has been spoiled from acid.

The tumor is not the problem but the solution to protect healthy cells and tissues from being spoiled from other rotting cells and tissues.

The only solution to the acidic liquids that poison body cells causing the affect that medical savants call cancer is to alkalize and energize the body.

In conclusion, the human body is alkaline by design and acidic by function! If we desire a healthy body we must maintain that alkaline design.

2) Does diet and lifestyle have anything to do with cancer?

Absolutely!

Cancer is not something we get it is something we do as a consequence of daily choice of what we eat, what we drink, what we think and how we live.

We either have an alkaline lifestyle and diet and enjoy a fit and healthy body or we have an acidic lifestyle and diet and experience the aches, pains and suffering from metabolic acids.

The former US Surgeon General, C. Everett Koop, had this to say about diet:"YOUR CHOICE OF DIET CAN INFLUENCE YOUR LONG TERM HEALTH PROSPECTS MORE THAN ANY OTHER ACTION YOU MIGHT TAKE."

3) If cancer is preventable how do we prevent it?I have said many times that the cure for cancerous tissue will not be found in its treatment but in its prevention.

That prevention can only be obtained by making healthier lifestyle and dietary choices. A cancerous condition is the consequence of choice.

For example, if you want to reduce your risk for cancereous tissue of the lung by 100%, then stop smoking and stop associating or working around people that do smoke.

Secondary smoke is just as acidic and damaging to the lung tissue. If don't want a cancerous liver then stop drinking alcohol and carbonated drinks.

If you don't want a cancerous pancreas then stop eating the acid sugar. If you don't want a cancerous bowel then stop eating protein.

It is that simple. The following are a few research studies from around the world that substantiate my own findings:

Study: Human study at Harbin Medical College in China

Results: CABBAGE was the most important single food in reducing the risk of stomach cancer

Study: Italian study on SmokersResults: Smokers who consumed GREEN LEAFY and other VEGETABLES had a THREE FOLD REDUCTION in their risk of lung cancer with smokers who rarely ate vegetables.

Study: Hebel Cancer Institute in ChinaResults: GARLIC, ONION AND TOMATO had the ability to INHIBIT the CELL MUTATION caused by common chemotherapeutic drugs... this is based on conclusive evidence that chemotherapy drugs cause cell mutations and lead to other types of cancers later in life.

Study: Mayo Clinic

Results: Cancer patients receiving radiation therapy can benefit dramatically from optimal VEGETABLE based diets.Study: University of Athens School of Medicine in GreeceResults: Women who consumed the LOWEST level of vegetables had 10 TIMES the rate of BREAST CANCER compared to women consuming the HIGHEST level of vegetables.

Study: Human study in AustraliaResults: Consumption of CABBAGE, CARROTS AND GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES substantial protection against COLON CANCER.Study: Aichi Cancer Institute of JapanResults: Eating VEGETABLES reduced the risk of CERVICAL and BREAST CANCER in women.Study: Cancer Control Agency of British ColumbiaResults: Eating VEGETABLES dramatically reduced incidence of BREAST CANCER.

4) If I have cancer, such as colon, lung, or prostate cancer can I reverse it naturally? The answer to this question is absolutely! Once you understand the cause of ALL cancerous tissues as latent tissue acidosis you can then begin the process of reversing, regenerating and preventing the consequences of acidic choices by making healthier alkaline choices.

The protocol for a healthier and energetic body, free from all sickness and dis-ease, is found in Chapter Eleven of our latest book, "The pH Miracle for Weight Loss."In closing, I would like to share with you my vision of medicine in the 21st century.

My vision of the relative purpose of medicine is to include prevention of illness and promotion of health and fitness rather than focusing all our attention on the diagnosis and treatment of disease. I believe the ultimate purpose of medicine is to help people discover something fundamental within themselves.

And that is the awareness that the true source of well-being, joy, and contentment that we all seek lies within one's mind and heart - the emotions and the spirit - not in the physical world. This is important, so we can all begin to be freed from the process of grasping for happiness in this physical world.

To support this approach, I believe we must begin to embrace a more spiritual vision of ourselves and of humanity as a whole. While providing great love, care and attention to the physical body, medicine can then and only then can we help people discover the nonphysical, spiritual dimensions of themselves.

When this happens, we can all live and work with less fear, stress, grasping to preserve the physical body at all costs - we can truly be free.

Are Parasites Making You Fat?

In this month's National Magazine, First for Women, the cover story features Dr. Robert O. Young who suggests that the natural by-products of parasites are acids that make 32% of women in the US sick, tired and fat.

That's 1 and 3 Americans who are affected!

Dr. Young also suggest that the acidic waste products from parasites can damage organs, break down muscle tissue and cause the central nervous system to become sluggish.

Ironically, the body's self-preservation system can make the problem worse by shuttling acid waste from parasites into the fat cells and slowing metabolic rate so more portective fat must be stored.

This is the body's way of getting acids out of circulation, but it makes losing weight virtually impossible.

To learn more about how acidic wastes are making you sick, tired and fat may I suggest reading our book, The pH Miracle for Weight Loss or you can pick up a copy of First for Women at your local grocery or magazine store.

Ultrasound Successful in Thyroid Nodule Trial

(HealthDay News) -- A new technology designed to remove growths from the thyroid gland with high-intensity focused ultrasound beams has passed its first test in humans, French researchers report.
The hope is that the treatment will eliminate the need for surgery that often is performed to remove the growths, formally called nodules, said Dr. Oliver Esnault, an endocrine surgeon at Saint-Louis Hospital in Paris and a leader of the trial.
But the technology is in its early stages, Esnault said. "We just treated 25 patients with this technology," he said. "It may take three or four years to be sure the technology is convenient to patients, and we are not certain yet that we will be able to use it routinely."
Thyroid nodules are fairly common. Many go unnoticed, and only 5 percent are cancerous. But since the thyroid sits at the base of the neck, some nodules can grow large enough to interfere with breathing. And overproduction of thyroid hormones by some nodules can cause symptoms such as unexpected weight loss and abnormal heartbeats.
The 25 people in the trial were designated for surgery to remove their enlarged thyroids, which had multiple nodules. Surgery was, in fact, performed two weeks after their nodules were exposed to the high-intensity focused ultrasound. The main object of the study was to determine how patients reacted to the treatment, Esnault said. A single nodule was targeted in each patient.
Three patients were frightened enough that their treatment was stopped, he reported, but it was "well tolerated in all other patients." Skin blisters were seen in seven participants, which led to a slight redesign of the ultrasound equipment.
When the highest level of focused ultrasound was used, 70 percent of the nodular tissue was destroyed, Esnault said. "This study confirmed the feasibility and safety of the high-intensity focused ultrasound procedure," he concluded.
Esnault presented the findings Thursday at the American Thyroid Association annual meeting, in Phoenix.
The research is being financed by INSERM, the French equivalent of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. INSERM designed the prototype equipment, and "we have an industrial partner involved in the project," Esnault said. "They are building a series of prototypes."
Esnault and his colleagues have begun two new studies designed to determine which patients are the best candidates for the ultrasound treatment. One study, for example, includes people whose nodules produce excessive amounts of thyroid hormone.
Dr. Gregory Brent is secretary of the American Thyroid Association. "The [study] results look good, but it is obviously a small study," he said. "But with this kind of result, it gives you confidence that you can try non-surgical treatments for thyroid nodules. This is certainly a very important study, showing that ultrasound can shrink nodules without damaging surrounding tissue."
Ultrasound treatment probably will be usable for a subset of people with thyroid nodules, Brent said, and "right now it is hard for anyone to know how large that subset will be."

Treating Polymyalgia Rheumatica?

Treating Polymyalgia Rheumatica?
Q: What should my wife take for polymyalgia rheumatica? -- Richard Williamson

A: Polymyalgia rheumatica is an inflammatory disorder that causes muscle pain and morning stiffness (sometimes both quite severe) in the upper arms and legs, neck, shoulder and hip areas. It occurs primarily in older people (the average age at diagnosis is 70), rarely is diagnosed before age 50, and affects women twice as often as men. Although no one knows what causes it, immune system abnormalities and genetic factors are suspected.
Polymyalgia rheumatica seems to be related to another condition, giant cell arteritis (also called temporal arteritis and cranial arteritis), which causes inflammation in the arteries in the head (usually those in the temples). The inflammation causes swelling which narrows or stretches the arteries and may pose a threat to vision. About 15 percent of people in the United States who have polymyalgia rheumatica also have giant cell arteritis, and about half the people with giant cell arteritis also have polymyalgia rheumatica. Because of the threat to sight, those with giant cell arteritis in addition to polymyalgia rheumatica must take the steroid drug prednisone until symptoms disappear and tests show that there is no longer a risk of blindness. Signs of this disorder can include headache, pain in the temple, blurred or double vision, and flu-like symptoms.
Polymyalgia rheumatica may begin abruptly but usually develops in a gradual manner over a couple of weeks. Mild or early cases are marked by morning symptoms (lasting one to two hours after waking, then returning after periods of inactivity) as well as fatigue, a sense of weakness, weight loss and low-grade fever, all of which can accompany the pain and stiffness.
The disease often goes away without treatment in a year or more, but prednisone can bring the symptoms under control within a day or two. The drug really works well for this condition although you always want to take the lowest possible dose and discontinue treatment as soon as possible. Typically, the initial dose is increased until symptoms disappear, and then gradually decreased to the lowest amount needed to relieve symptoms. Treatment usually continues for six months to two years but may be restarted if symptoms recur.
At first, your wife will need prednisone for the relief it offers. She also might try aerobic exercise, which a friend affected with this condition has told me makes a big difference. I also recommend whole licorice for treatment of inflammatory disorders. You can find whole licorice as a root or extract. Look for products with six to 10 percent glycyrrhizin and follow the dosage direction on the package. Since whole licorice can worsen high blood pressure, check with your doctor before taking it if your pressure is high. Licorice root capsules can be used in the amount of 5-6 g per day. Concentrated extracts can be used in the amount of 250-500 mg three times per day. This approach may enable your wife to lower her prednisone dose. In addition, she should try to maintain an anti-inflammatory diet. I also recommend using the herbal anti-inflammatory agent Zyflamend from New Chapter. Chinese medicine and mind/body techniques such as hypnotherapy and guided imagery can also help; visit the Mind/Body/Spirit section on this site for more information on these and other techniques.

Respect Your Natural Urges

by Dr. Aniruddha Kulkarni

Human existence is essentially attributed to constant, continuous oneness of body, mind and soul. We are alive when these constituents are together. When soul and mind departs from body, we usually label it as ' death'. In order to healthy operations of these constituents some urges are created naturally.

These urges are known in ayurveda as ' vega'. Vega is a very fundamental and important concept of ayurveda. It is essential for our good health not to suppress urges from body, but, suppress the urges which are concerned with the mind.

In maintenance of health, we have to accept air, food etc. into our body. After their entry in the body, they are properly digested. After digestion they are divided in two parts, viz. prasad or nutritious part and mala or excretory part. This excretory part should be thrown out of body.

Sometimes for continuation of human life, shukra i.e. semen and artava i.e. ovum are also ejaculated from the body. All these natural ' acceptance ' and ' excretion ' processes are called as ' vega '. For urges to be respected, various nerves, muscles, sphincters come in the action.

The urges can be suppressed for some period by the power of mind. We can also create some urges by stimulating mind. But, ayurveda do not recommend this forceful suppression and creation of urges.

It is identified as a major factor for presenting opportunity to initiate disease process. We have to suppress the urges while in traveling, work, meetings and discussions, and sometimes only because " it doesn't look good " like things. But, keep in mind that these acts are not good for health.

Ayurveda has described different urges and the symptoms arising out of their suppression.

Urge
Symptoms arising of suppression

Gas in the abdomen
Pain in abdomen, constipation, painful urination, loss of appetite, pressure on heart.

Faeces
Cramps in legs, running nose, pains in eyes, distressing movements of abdominal gas, binding pains in heart.

Urine
Body ache, pain in penis, urinary calculus.

Semen
Pain and edema in genitals, cardiac pain, stoppage of urination, sperm calculus, infertility.

Thirst
Dryness of mouth and palate, weakness, numbness, fainting, increase in heart rate.

Hunger
Loss of taste, weakness, loss of weight, pain in abdomen, body ache.

Belching
Loss of taste, binding feeling in heart, hiccough, tightness of abdomen.

Yawning and sneezing
Loss of power of sense organs, headache, neck pain, facial paralysis.

Tears
Running nose, pain in head and eyes, fainting.
Dysnea after exertion
Heart disease, fainting, weakness.
Cough
Stressful respiration, more cough, loss of taste, heart disease.
Vomiting
Patches on skin, skin diseases, fever, cough, nausea.

These are the various urges and symptoms arising out of their suppression. The most significant observation is that, at nine times, heart related symptoms are mentioned. It is our duty to seriously look at this concept, while global cardiac epidemic is ready to break out.

Apart from these urges, there are some urges like sleep, speech and especially, in females, menstrual cycle. The trend is on rise to take tablets and injections for forceful suppression and initiation of menstrual cycle. It is not advisable to insult our natural system again and again. It will definitely lead us to a diseased state.

Chi Nei Tsang is a holistic approach to the healing touch modality

Chi Nei Tsang is a holistic approach to the healing touch modality: "What is Chi Nei Tsang?
Chi Nei Tsang, also known as internal organ massage, is a massage performed on the abdominal area of the body with a goal of balancing the energies inside the internal organs. Chi Nei Tsang descends directly from Taoism and the belief that this area of the stomach (the part around and behind the naval) is the most vital center in the body for life energy. Taoists believe that this is where energy is stored, generated and distributed to the rest of the body. Chi Nei Tsang massage therapy is very important in this belief because this vital life force energy provides health, well-being and longevity. If this becomes blocked or disrupted, the body will experience bad health and illness. By receiving Chi Nei Tsang, the patient is able to prevent disease, as well as experience healing.
What are the benefits of Chi Nei Tsang?
There are many benefits that can be achieved through Chi Nei Tsang, including the following:

• Detoxification—during the massage, as the stomach becomes more and more relaxed, the Chi Nei Tsang therapist is able to massage deeper into it. This can lead to detoxification in the body’s largest lymph node system.

• Improved immunity—just as with the lymphatic system, the immune system can be improved in function by this deep massage, which will then help the body begin to heal itself of illnesses as well as prevent them in the future.

• Raised metabolism—when this happens, the patient may experience many added benefits, including natural healthy weight loss as well as more energy than before.

• Relaxation and stress relief—as with most forms of massage, Chi Nei Tsang allows patience to relax fully and be relieved of stress, which then can "
